FALMOUTH 350 NEWSLETTER                               SEPTEMBER 2011

GO THE GALLOPING GOATS AND WIN FOR FALMOUTH

Yes, well done Ken Brandt of Falmouth Pennsylvania for giving us a thrill. His Falmouth is the world centre for goat racing and the big meet is on September 25th year. Not one to miss an opportunity, he plans to dedicate one race to FALMOUTHS AROUND THE WORLD. Great to have you on board, Ken-and you Suzanne Corkum, yes Nova Scotia is now fully on board. Suzanne is in the wine industry, her firm is Sainte-Famille (check them out on google) and she warns that the call may come through right on the harvest but she will cope. Mayor Mike Hart from Falmouth Kentucky is going to attend our Falmouth Cornwall reception, whilst Massachusetts Falmouth man Brian Nickerson is visiting us the week before our dinner. Another distinguished visitor to the dinner is Basil Hylton, Secretariat of the Jamaican Diaspora UK-West Midlands, he looks after the interests of Jamaicans living in the UK.

Brand Vanhaitsma of Falmouth Michigan has been sent the FALMOUTH STONE, collected from our Gyllingvase beach for him to throw into their pond on October 5th, whilst hot news comes from Sari Budrow and Jay Zavalara of Falmouth Cape Cod -their October 5th celebration lunch is to be attended by Senator Theresa Murray and the British Consul. They and Jamaica are planning on running a skype link with our dinner in The Falmouth Hotel. Kate Kammer of Falmouth Virginia has just discovered that they are a year younger than they thought they were, whilst a chat with Tim McManus reveals that he plans to run a one man party in the small early hours of October 6th, to coincide with our dinner in Cornwall.

Back here in Falmouth, events are now moving at a furious pace. I attended the first rehearsal of Stephanie Haxtons play "Remember"  specially written for our celebration and was inspired by the enthusiasm of Stephanie, by our Theatrical Director Jason Squibb and his team and by the amateur actors who threw themselves into the first reading with smooth professionalism. Jason is also highly active planning surprises for his wonderful enactment of a skirmish between Royalists and Parliamentarians, called For King and Kernow which will be presented by our pupils of the schools. Jason has promised us a few surprises. Next week The Mayor is to hold a full run through of the gloriously exciting civic parade on October 2nd, whilst Rory Macfee is recruiting his team of local people to build those two heritage boats during the festival week.

Thanks go to the residents of Arwenack House, who are going to open this historic property to tours of the public on Saturday October 8th-just turn up for the tour-and how about Skinners who have now come in with the Skinners Falmouth 350 Shanty Festival on the afternoon of Saturday October 8th.

Meanwhile the book committee is hard at work, the plan is to distribute this book to all students and then sell it in bookshops so everyone can get a copy. Speaking about books, Tim McManus of Tasmania has written a wonderful book on the history of Falmouth Tasmania. It is perhaps the smallest of our family, but what a history it has and we are going to display the book at our dinner on October 5th.

That celebration dinner on 5th October promises to be very special. With the Mayor of Kentucky and his wife flying over for it, with Brian Nickerson of Falmouth Maine USA visiting the week before, with Basil Hylton coming to the dinner along with His Excellency Dr Roberts, High Commissioner in the UK for Antigua and Barbuda, and of course our speaker Lia Ditton, we are sure to have a great time. At the start guests will be entertained by Famouth Shout, the top Shanty group, and there will be a display of Falmouths around the World. Guests at the dinner will have the chance of speaking to people in all the Falmouths. This dinner, which is organised by Falmouth Rotary Club, is a sell out.

Sally Robinson and the Killigrew Choir are in full flight now with rehearsals for All the Kings Men, and for the singing of Cornish songs by everyone, on October 8th, a grandstand finish to the official week.

And how about Lorely Lord and her helpers, planning the very different and exciting Paupers Luncheon on October 8th. They are already searching out suitable costumes to wear, and those who turn up will get a free paupers luncheon.

But there are lots of others planning what they are going to do to mark our 350th celebrations and are hard at work filling in the details.

The above gives a glimpse of what is going on. The programme is still in draft form but once it is finalised we will be sending it out to you.

Help us by sending this newsletter to people on your e-mail listings. We lack an approprite budget to market all the activity and must rely on you to get the word around, the newspapers to print our stories, and Radio Cornwall, Source, Pirate and Atlantic, and the Western Morning News to help this astonishing effort produced by the people of Falmouth.

I will be taking a short break from September 9th to September 14th. I have the privilege of being a member of a choir of 350 who are singing in the official concert in New York to mark 9/11. It will be a very emotional experience.

Now we have all got this adventure up and flying, we must enthuse it along its path, so that we can say at the end that we did something remarkable for Falmouths around the world. A rip roaring welcome to all those Falmouths who have joined us to celebrate being from Falmouth, wherever you are.

Bye for now
